ROPE BURNS - these usually come from pulling rope across the skin under pressure and too fast. If the rigger knows his business and is as careful as he should be, you won’t get many and they’ll be very small. With the best will in the world, they may happen occasionally - and they’re just as likely during untying as when tying. You can get them from hard struggling and twisting in your ropes as well. Some types of rope are worse than others, and well-prepared natural fibre ropes are generally thought to be the least burn-prone. Generally, rope burns will take several days to disappear completely, but they can usually be disguised with make-up or disappeared with Photoshop or similar.

BRUISES - may occasionally happen with very tight ropes or if a bulky knot is pressed hard into the skin, or if a bit of skin gets pinched between ropes. They take as long to go as any other bruising. Make-up and digital image editing can work wonders!

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THEM
Keep well hydrated - most people believe this helps. It’s good advice anyway.
Avoid taking aspirin BEFORE rope bondage. It boosts the skin responses that cause short-term and long-term marks.
Take aspirin AFTER rope bondage. It then helps to clear the marks more quickly.
Use ARNICA GEL or CREAM (available from most chemists, 2 or 3 GBP per tube). It really does work for a lot of people.
Have a long hot muscle-relaxing bath soon afterwards!
Think about what you’re going to wear after the shoot - you may not want marks from the last set or two to show...
If possible avoid booking an Art Nude or swimwear shoot within a day or two of a bondage shoot. If you do, investigate make-up masking, and warn the photographer that he may have to put in a bit of extra Photoshop time!
